My experience with Bible Quiz was truly miraculous. I went to the informationmeeting on a whim, standing at the bottom of the stairs deciding if I should go toservice or this other ‘thing’, whatever it is…“Meh, I’ll check it out.” One of the biggestlife-altering experiences based off a “meh” feeling; the exact opposite way I feel andremember Bible Quiz today. That practice room held for me a best friend, a life-changingbook, and a family of friends.I never would have even guessed that I would have bonded with some of myfavorite people over a meticulous and nuanced form of jeopardy. I mean, come on! I playbasketball and was cool! I can’t be friends with…with…nerds! But I did. And JP remainsone of my best friends to this day.

Miraculous.

Sunday School. My mind fills with scattered and disconnected memories as I lookback on that childhood experience. Yet a few items stick out. I always remember lovingto hear about the Bible–not in a tell-me-more-about-Jesus-being-my-Shepard sort of waybut in this-book-has-got-awesome-stories-and-hidden-meanings sort of way. So when Iwent into Bible Quiz my interest in the Bible as both a text of literature and spiritualitywas inflamed. Rather than spending time on World of War Craft or any other videogame, God caught me before that wave crested and sent me surfing and on a real wave.

Miraculous.

The miraculous part about the family of friends is the sandwich dressing. Miraclewhip vs Mayonnaise. This constant contention is only scratches the surface of thehundreds of hours spent together. And that’s just it. I remember practice almost beinga drag because I just wanted to hang out with these people-why did JP have to studyso much?! We laughed, we worried, and we prayed. We did it all together and everymoment still makes me smile.

Miraculous.

Waiting for Bible Quiz Nationals was like standing in a place outside of time. The normal rules of minutes and days dissolved in daydreams, and living out the weird waiting game felt like being in a memory.

The week or so before Nationals, my family took a vacation to Disney World. I’d never been before, but the bounded land of dreams-do-come-true became more a sanctuary of surrealism than an adrenaline-inducing fun-and-fancy-freedom. Dominating thunderstorms and sudden downpours came with daily regularity, and the brightly-colored rides and neon letters stood in dreamlike contrast to the disturbed gray skies. I got lost in the booming clouds, the rain that clung to the air, and the steam that rose from the ground with the scent of dirt and cement.

The tempests of grumbling energy always drifted away in the early evening, leaving the air quietly charged with the power to excite my reckless hopes. Hanging over the balcony of our hotel room somewhere between biting cold conditioning and muggy outdoor air, I fantasized about the Nationals competition, the buzzer, the inaudible lean of bodies and eyes on quiz master lips. I could taste quick words on my tongue and hear the tacit applause from my team at a, “That is correct for twenty points.” I felt wrapped in a blanket of warm safety, and though I knew it was improper for a good Christian quizzer to fantasize about, I reveled in the thought of winning, of the glory, of the trophy. Of the admiration.

For some reason there in Florida, however, the thought of Nationals seemed otherworldly. Practicing the material and quoting the verses felt detached from the actual goal of winning, and it was hard to humble my wild ego. I knew I should have focused more, practiced harder, spent more time on the material. J.P. would be sweating blood over the book and praying his memory into sharper shape.

Certainly, the tug of obligation from far away Washington – the pressure to perform, the need to impress –still rose acidly within my gut at moments. And certainly, I still studied; in the afternoons with a yellow pad of paper, I still scribbled reminders, wrote lists from the concordance, memorized acronyms, and soaked my brain in highlighted patterns of green, orange, yellow, blue, and the occasional stain of red.

But Nationals was lost in the booming thunderstorms, and it was hard to believe, with warm rain on my scalp, that the year wasn’t over yet.

Homework was over.
Track was over.
Band was over.
Officially.
Period.

High school was over.
College was coming.

I’d tied up a lot of loose ends; if unsatisfactorily woven, they were, at least, knotted tightly. But this huge, demanding competition still loomed ahead–real and unreal like thunder in dark clouds – and it wasn’t until I landed back in Washington that the true panic of Nationals came tearing back into my reality. My confession is this: I didn’t practice enough in Florida.

I loved my years spent in Bible Quiz. The food, friends, competition, and of course the Word of God (yes, I listed food first on purpose) was all fantastic. Bible Quiz was a great and safe social outlet for me as a teen. I wasn’t someone who would ‘hit up a party’ with friends on the weekend, because it just wasn’t my style. However, being able to connect over something I was passionate about with like-minded people helped me step into my identity early in life.

For example, I was actively involved in sports, clubs, and other social events at school. But the night life of the high school crowd didn’t appeal to me. Bible Quiz became my niche, with friends (like Chris Teeny and Mikayla Irle) who I enjoyed spending time with. It also gave me a good taste of social diversity, because I was able to travel all around the United Sates, thanks to the generosity of people like Rachel Dawson and Rich Nelson. The friendships I built aren’t the ones where we get together once a year, and laugh about “that one time we did something stupid.” But I have friends like Jed Gosnell, or Richie Nelson that I can connect with on a regular basis.
Today I get the privilege of working at a church focused on building God’s Kingdom in the community of Lakewood WA. We are active in serving our community (food bank, free family events, free dinners), which is the reality of who Jesus is. Memorizing His word should not be separate from both life transformation and community transformation. The verses I memorized come to mind often, and not only assist me in my daily life, but allow me to minister to the people I see regularly. The bottom line for me is all about meeting the person of Jesus Christ and letting Him turn your world upside down. And all those years spent in Bible Quiz and memorizing The New Testament led me to Him.

Oh and for the record, I hated/loved being followed around by a camera. What 17 year old boy doesn’t like attention 24/7, but at the same time what 17 year old boy LIKES constant attention. I may have just used double reverse psychology on you Nicole Teeny. Another skill I picked up in Bible Quiz!!
